Five Ways to Stay Happy Working Away From Home
14 February 2022
Whether you are accustomed to it or not, working away from home can be a challenge, even to the most seasoned of work-away employees.
While meeting new people and discovering new surroundings can be exhilarating, it can also be exhausting. Our guests can experience these feelings, and while we do all we can to make Celador Apartments as comfortable and homely as possible, there are things that you can do to help you settle into your new surroundings.
1. Stay in Touch with Friends and Family
Keeping in touch with friends and family from home can ease feelings of homesickness and help you feel connected to your loved ones, however far away you may be from them. Don’t forget that friends and family are likely to be missing you as much as you are missing them, so they will appreciate a message or call too. Although messaging is sometimes easier due to time differences if you have relocated abroad, it is important to still plan video calls regularly to check-in and have a proper catch-up.
2. Establish a Routine
Being thrown out of your regular routine can be one of the most disorientating things working away from home. Try as much as possible to stick to a similar routine to at home. It may take extra planning to stay in contact with loved ones, as time zone differences can be a challenge. By establishing a routine as to when you contact friends and family at home, you can ensure that you are able to stay in touch and catch up regularly at a time that suits you both.
3. Avoid Working Alone
Reading is home to many business parks with multinational company offices, meaning many corporate guests stay here. However, Covid-19 has caused a rise in home working and sometimes going into the office is not always possible. Although it might seem easy to work from the comfort of your apartment, working from home alone can be extremely isolating. Try to avoid working home alone if possible. If you don’t have access to an office, Reading has lots of coffee shops and coworking spaces that allow you to work with others around you.
4. Explore Your New Location
Although you are in your new home to work, that doesn’t mean that is all you should do during your time away. Reading has lots of places to explore and plenty of history, including the famous 900-year-old Abbey Ruins. There are also plenty of shops, green spaces, restaurants and entertainment venues, not to mention London right on the doorstep - so make the most of your time living in your new location!
5. Get Out and Meet People
Although you may miss your loved ones, getting out and socialising is one of the best things you can do while working away. Whether it’s continuing the conversation with a new client over dinner or going to the pub with colleagues you are travelling with, spending time with others can be beneficial both personally and professionally. Sometimes the most casual and relaxed social moments are where the best business breakthroughs happen, so never underestimate the importance of spending social time with clients and colleagues!
