Things to Do This Summer in and Around Reading

Jun 06, 2022

If you are staying with us at Celador Apartments over the summer months, there is plenty to do to keep busy!
For children and adults alike, there are lots of activities and cultural visits, both in and around Reading. Here are some of our favourite things to do this summer:

Take a Trip to Reading Open Air Theatre

The open-air theatre returns to Abbey Ruins from 20-30th July, this year with a production of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Watch from the comfort of a beanbag or deck chair as the sun sets over the Abbey Ruins in this fast-paced adaptation of the classic novel from Progress Theatre.

Watch the Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle

The changing of the Guard is a very British tradition, and you can see it every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at Windsor Castle. The guards set off from Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street and march through the Town Centre to the Queen’s des res. The ceremony takes place at 11am inside the castle, usually accompanied by a band, and then the old guard heads back to the barracks at 11.25am. A highlight to see during a visit to Windsor.

Explore Cliveden

Cliveden was voted the second most Instagrammed National Trust property in the UK last year and is a must-see during the summer months. With 375 acres of gardens, woodlands overlooking the River Thames and a maze, there is plenty for the whole family to explore and enjoy. The house, which was once occupied by a Prince of Wales, two Dukes, an Earl, the party-loving Astors, and the setting for the Profumo Affair, is also now open to the public, after being closed during the pandemic.

Discover Some Natural History and Culture

Based in the Victorian Town Hall in the centre of town, Reading Museum has lots to discover, including a full-size Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry, modern art and sculpture, the natural history of Reading and more. A little further afield, in London, the Science Museum and Natural History Museum offer floors of entertainment for both adults and children - all for free.

Go on a Picnic

Nothing feels like summer as much as a picnic - from Forbury Gardens and Abbey Ruins in Reading town centre to Pangbourne Meadows (a spot loved by The Wind In The Willows author Kenneth Grahame) where you can sit and look out at the water, there are plenty of picnic spots in and around Reading. For somewhere to take the children, Wellington Country Park offers the biggest outdoor playground in Berkshire, set in 350 acres of parkland, making it ideal for a family day out.

Experience World-Class Music Acts at Reading Festival

The world’s oldest pop music festival takes place at Little John’s Farm over the August Bank Holiday. Over the last 50 years, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream and the Kinks have all played the event, and since 1999 the event has been held simultaneously in Reading and Leeds in West Yorkshire. Day tickets and weekend tickets are available, but they do tend to sell out quickly, so be sure to check in advance.
